The popular entertainment area of Las Verónicas, in Arona, Tenerife, is once again in the spotlight following the death of a 37-year-old man in a brawl. This zone, known for its high tourist influx and its venues operating since the 1980s, has been the scene of numerous incidents over the decades, prompting administrations to attempt measures such as increased police presence and the installation of surveillance cameras.
Business owners in the area, organized under the Association of Entrepreneurs of Playa de Las Américas and Costa Adeje (Aepaca), have been requesting the installation of video surveillance devices for over 15 years due to the "constant presence of brawls and robberies." Despite announcements made by the Arona City Council in 2022 regarding camera installation, these have yet to be implemented.
In the last two years, Las Verónicas has experienced a series of serious incidents, including stabbings, brawls, violent robberies, mobile phone thefts, and drug trafficking operations. Among the most notable events are the stabbing of a 31-year-old man in August 2024, and the knife attack on an 18-year-old British tourist in 2026 while trying to recover a stolen mobile phone.
The archives also record viral fights among tourists in October 2025, assaults that left young people in critical condition in November 2025, and accidental falls resulting in severe head trauma. The recent death on May 28, 2026, in front of an entertainment venue adds to this list of violent events. Furthermore, the area has been the site of police interventions for robberies, drugs, and crimes against sexual freedom, including anti-drug operations and arrests for assaults and robberies.
