The CajaCanarias Foundation has scheduled a new screening for this Thursday, September 10, as part of its film series 'My Favorite Film'. The selected movie for this occasion is The Post (2017), directed by Steven Spielberg. The event will be presented by local journalist Digna Martín.
The event will take place at 6:30 PM at the CajaCanarias Cultural Space in La Palma, with free admission until full capacity. Detailed information is available at www.cajacanarias.com.
The film, starring Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks, tells the story based on Washington Post documents that revealed classified information about the Vietnam War. Its publication sparked significant debate in American society regarding freedom of expression, culminating in a legal battle before the Supreme Court.
In June 1971, The New York Times and The Washington Post took a brave stand for freedom of expression by reporting on the Pentagon Papers and the government's massive four-decade cover-up spanning four presidencies. At that time, Katherine Graham (Meryl Streep), the Post's first female publisher, and editor Ben Bradlee (Tom Hanks), were striving to relaunch a declining newspaper. Together, they decided to support The New York Times and fight against the Nixon Administration's attempt to restrict the First Amendment.
The Post was named one of the ten best films of the year by Time magazine and the American Film Institute. It received six nominations at the 2017 Golden Globe Awards and two nominations at the 2018 Academy Awards, including best picture and best actress for Meryl Streep.
Digna Martín (born in Barlovento in 1970), who holds a degree in Journalism from the Complutense University (1992), has over 30 years of professional experience. She has worked in various media, primarily print, such as Canarias 7, el periódico La Isla, Diario de Avisos, and El Día. Since May 2009, she has been the editor of La Palma's first digital newspaper, El Apurón.
