The Bathing Water Quality Surveillance Program in Tenerife analyzed 891 samples in 2026, confirming that 99% of areas are suitable for swimming.

During 2026, the Bathing Water Quality Surveillance Program in Tenerife collected a total of 891 samples from fifty bathing areas on the island, performing 1,782 microbiological determinations. The results indicate that 99 percent of these analyzed coastal zones have maintained their suitability for bathing, with negative results for contamination by intestinal Enterococci and Escherichia coli.
According to 2025 analyses, 92 percent of bathing areas received an excellent rating, while 6.4 percent were rated good and 1.6 percent as sufficient. Out of the 62 sampling points, 57 maintained an excellent rating, four were rated good, and one was sufficient.
The General Directorate of Public Health of the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS) implements the Surveillance Program, governed by Royal Decree 1341/2007, to protect bathers' health. The analytical values are published on the national platform NAYADE.
The 2026 program covers fifty bathing areas across seventeen municipalities, with 62 sampling points. Surveillance includes visual inspection and microbiological control of intestinal Enterococci and Escherichia coli.
The control schedule varies by bathing season. For year-round bathing zones, surveillance levels include intensive (21 controls), normal (fifteen), and reduced (thirteen). For the summer season, normal surveillance comprises nine scheduled controls between May and September.
Throughout 2026, the closure of bathing areas was recommended in only one percent of sampling points due to short-term contamination. Eleven closure recommendations were issued, affecting beaches such as Playa Jardín (three times) and others like El Camisón, Los Cristianos, El Médano, El Médano-Leocadio Machado, El Socorro, La Pinta, Castillo-Bajamar, and the natural pools of Bajamar.
Comparative analysis of data from January to September 2026 with previous years shows no upward trend in incidents. Between 2020 and 2025, the annual average of declared unsuitable bathing areas was nine.
