The initiative, in collaboration with the Forest Brigades (BRIFOR), primarily aims to educate and raise awareness among students from Primary, Secondary, and Baccalaureate levels about forest fire prevention and extinction. The program encourages young people to reflect on fire behavior, assess fire risks, and adopt appropriate preventive behaviors.
The President of the Tenerife Island Council, Rosa Dávila, emphasized that protecting the territory is a collective duty that must begin in classrooms. She recalled that forest fires pose a significant risk to the natural environment, leading to soil and biodiversity loss. Dávila highlighted the program's focus on awareness and education as crucial tools for preventing fires.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Natural Environment, Sustainability, Security, and Emergencies, Blanca Pérez, explained that the initiative's success stems from an active methodology featuring free loan educational resources, such as the ‘Mochila didáctica’ (Didactic Backpack) and the ‘Exposición de paneles’ (Panel Exhibition). Following classroom work, students participate in practical visits where BRIFOR personnel conduct demonstrations and showcase extinction tools.
The program's methodology actively involves teachers through temporary loan physical and digital materials. After classroom activities, selected schools receive a visit from the BRIFOR team, who perform extinction demonstrations and display technical equipment like chainsaws and water propulsion systems, allowing students to firsthand appreciate the human effort involved in firefighting.
The official application period for educational centers will be open from September 14 to 30. Classroom activities will commence on October 13, 2026, and run until May 14, 2027, with the BRIFOR brigades' demonstration visits officially starting from November 2.
