The Ministry of Health, the Canarian Health Service (SCS), and the Canary Islands Health Research Institute (IISC) will present two dozen awards this Thursday, October 29th, at the Center for Initiatives of the Caja de Canarias (CICCA) in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, during the third edition of the Canary Islands Health Sciences and Biomedical Research Awards.

These awards aim to recognize and value the effort, dedication, and positive impact of the various professionals, teams, services, units, and research groups working in the Archipelago's health sector. They are divided into two modalities: Research and Innovation, and Health Awards, with a total of eight categories.
The Research and Innovation modality recognizes the best research team, the best research project, the best innovative project with transfer potential, and the best scientific publication. The award for Best Research Team goes to the Hereditary Kidney Diseases and pre-mRNA Alterations team at the University Hospital Nuestra Señora de Candelaria. In the Best Scientific Publication category, two works have been highlighted from the University Hospital Complex Insular-Materno Infantil and the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. The University Hospital Complex of the Canary Islands has been awarded for its Emergency Project 2024-2026, and the University Hospital Nuestra Señora de Candelaria for its research on chronic kidney disease.
The Health Awards modality recognizes the trajectory and commitment of SCS professionals. Eleven distinctions are awarded to professionals, one for each health management area, in addition to awards for the best humanization initiative, the service with the best implementation of innovative therapies, and the best care plan. The Best Humanization Initiative recognizes two projects ex aequo: Palliative Care in Primary Care from the Tenerife Primary Care Management and the Patient Experience Unit (UEXPA) of the University Hospital Doctor Negrín of Gran Canaria. The award for innovative therapies goes to the Electroporation Atrial Fibrillation Ablation Program at the University Hospital Nuestra Señora de Candelaria, and the best care plan to the Comprehensive Care Model of the Psychoneurogeriatrics Unit of the University Hospital Complex Insular-Materno Infantil.
Additionally, an extraordinary award is given for professional trajectory and two recognitions to patients. The eleven professionals honored in the best professionals category come from diverse areas such as medicine, nursing, health management and administration, midwifery, hospital pharmacy, and dentistry, reflecting the multidisciplinary nature of the Canarian health system.
