The official event will begin at 9:30 PM in the Basilica of Candelaria, marking the start of the August festive program in the Villa Mariana. The ceremony will feature a performance by the Agrupación Folklórica Tejeguate, presenting the 'Baile de La Virgen'. Welcomes are expected from the Rector of the Basilica, fray Dailos José Melo González, O.P., and the presentation of the proclaimer by the mayoress-president of the Candelaria City Council, María Concepción Brito Núñez.
Musical accompaniment will be provided by El Hierro singer Claudia Álamo, who will present her latest work, ‘Selvadentro’. She will be accompanied by Jonay Mesa and Yeray Herrera, offering a repertoire that blends original compositions like ‘Meda pa quererse’, ‘La cura’, or ‘Otro sol’ with traditional Canarian pieces.
The Mayoress of Candelaria, María Concepción Brito Núñez, highlighted the special significance of the proclamation for the General Patron Saint of the Archipelago coming from El Hierro this year, thus concluding a cycle of proclimers from each of the Islands. She emphasized the commitment to making Candelaria 'the home for all Canarians'.
The Agrupación Folklórica Tejeguate, founded in 1976 in La Frontera (El Hierro), celebrates its half-century of trajectory this year, being a veteran group and a reference in the recovery of musical genres and ethnographic scenes. Meanwhile, Claudia Álamo has nearly twenty years of career and is a consolidated voice in the Canary Islands.
The proclamation will be broadcast on delay by La 2 de TVE en Canarias and Televisión Canaria. The complete program for the event will be available for download in PDF format via a QR code.
Eligio Hernández, born in El Pinar (El Hierro) in 1947, holds a Law degree and a diploma in Human Rights. He has served as State Attorney General, a member of the Council of State and the General Council of the Judiciary, a deputy in the Parliament of the Canary Islands, civil governor, and Government delegate in the Canary Islands, as well as a full member of the Royal Academy of the Canary Language.
