The town of El Médano is preparing to host, for the twelfth time, the Wind&Waves Festival, which will take place from July 31 to August 9. This event will turn El Cabezo beach into the main stage for the twelfth edition of the PWA/WWT Open, Junior, and Masters World Championship, for both male and female categories.
As new additions for this edition, the festival will incorporate the Spanish Open Championship and the Foil Drive Challenge, thus expanding the competitive offerings and attracting a larger number of athletes and fans.
The official presentation of the festival took place at the Hotel Playa Surf and was attended by prominent personalities. Among them were Lope Afonso, Vice President and Minister of Tourism of the Tenerife Island Council; Dimple Melwani, CEO of Turismo de Tenerife; José Domingo Regalado, Mayor of Granadilla de Abona; Eudita Mendoza, Councilor for Tourism of the Granadilla de Abona City Council; and Daniel Bruch, CEO of Wind&Waves Festival.
Lope Afonso highlighted that the event is a clear example of how Tenerife leverages its natural conditions to position itself as a leading destination for water sports, projecting the island's image and attracting visitors interested in sports, nature, and sustainability. He emphasized the Island Council's commitment to events that generate economic activity and boost local municipalities.
Dimple Melwani stressed the importance of the island once again hosting a prestigious event on the international calendar, consolidating Tenerife as a destination for major outdoor sporting events and showcasing its exceptional conditions for windsurfing and other water sports.
The Mayor of Granadilla de Abona, José Domingo Regalado, stated that the festival is an essential event that projects the name of the municipality worldwide, hosting the sport's elite and offering a program of activities for residents and visitors, thereby reinforcing the area's tourist and sporting brand.
Eudita Mendoza, Councilor for Tourism, described the festival as an experience that goes beyond competition, bringing together families and professionals with a diverse program including a commercial area, gastronomy, a children's area, and live music, consolidating El Médano as a hub for leisure and sports.
Dani Bruch, the event promoter, pointed to El Médano's unique conditions, such as wind and waves, along with strong local community support, as key factors in the championship's success, noting it is one of the few urban beaches on the circuit.
The Wind&Waves Festival is supported by the Government of the Canary Islands (Islas Canarias Latitud de Vida), the Tenerife Island Council (Turismo de Tenerife and Tenerife Despierta Emociones), and the Granadilla de Abona City Council. It also benefits from sponsorship by brands such as Playa Surf CBbC Hotel, Balearia, Veinte 04, Future Fly Boards, and Foil Drive.
