The Ministry of Health has confirmed that the MV Hondius cruise ship, carrying a hantavirus outbreak, will dock at the secondary pier of Granadilla de Abona, in southern Tenerife, within the next three days, posing no risk to the Canary Islands population.

The Minister of Health explained that all passengers on board are asymptomatic. The three symptomatic cases and the ship's doctor were previously evacuated from Cape Verde. Upon arrival in Tenerife, the 14 Spanish citizens on the vessel will be evaluated and then transferred by military aircraft to the Torrejón de Ardoz base, and from there to the Gómez Ulloa military hospital, which has high-level isolation units for their quarantine.
Meanwhile, the Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has reported that the MV Hondius has requested authorization to call at the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife on Saturday, May 9, at 12 noon. The ship, consigned by Gibunco Ship Agency S.L., will remain anchored in Santa Cruz until Foreign Health and the Maritime Captaincy issue docking authorization, at which point the corresponding health protocol will be activated.

"The regional executive has been informed at all times about the cruise ship's situation."

The Minister of Health also responded to statements made by the president of the Government of the Canary Islands, assuring that the regional administration has been continuously informed about the cruise ship's situation. The president of the Government of the Canary Islands had stated in various media outlets that he learned through the press about the Ministry of Health's decision to receive the ship in Spain, and had requested an urgent meeting with the president of the central Government to ask that the vessel not dock in the islands, arguing that health safety conditions were not guaranteed.
