Elderly residents from the San Miguel de Abona Senior Center shared their knowledge about prickly pear and cochineal during a meeting held at Finca Tamaide.

The San Miguel de Abona City Council, along with the Fundación Canarina and the Canarian artist Andrea Moreno, organized an event at Finca Tamaide where seniors from the Senior Center shared their expertise on prickly pear and cochineal cultivation. These testimonies will serve to document the traditional uses and practices of these crops in a future publication.
Mayor Arturo González highlighted the importance of this knowledge: 'Our elderly residents preserve exceptional knowledge and memories that help us understand how the land was worked and the role crops like prickly pear and cochineal played in the municipality's life'.
For her part, the councilor for the Senior area, Yurena Melián, stated that 'listening to their experiences allows us to document these practices and pass them on to new generations'.
Participants explained in detail the cultivation of prickly pear and cochineal, the tools used, and their various applications. This information provides valuable data on agricultural practices that are part of the rural memory of San Miguel de Abona and the agricultural heritage of southern Tenerife.
Artist Andrea Moreno, currently participating in the La Reposera artistic residency, is working on new pictorial pieces inspired by these crops. The event will contribute to the creation of a publication that will collect the shared testimonies and knowledge.
