Teacher and beloved neighbor Maricarmen Hernández, closely linked to the educational and cultural life of San Gregorio and Telde, will be responsible for officially announcing the celebrations of the patron saint festivals of San Gregorio Taumaturgo 2026. The proclamation will take place next Friday, November 6th, at 8:00 PM, in the Plaza de San Gregorio. The day will begin at 7:00 PM with the traditional announcing street parade.
The mayor of Telde, Juan Antonio Peña, personally communicated the choice to the protagonist, who expressed surprise and emotion at the appointment. Maricarmen Hernández approaches this challenge with enthusiasm, highlighting her long participation in the history of her neighborhood.
Her connection with the church of San Gregorio dates back to her childhood, helping with cleaning tasks and eventually playing the organ by ear. This initiative marked the beginning of a relationship that has spanned over six decades, accompanying numerous moments of parish life with her music and participating in the choir.
Hernández's career is marked by her dedication to teaching and music. She began giving classes at the age of 14 at the San Antonio school and furthered her musical education at the Conservatory of Las Palmas, specializing in musical language. She worked as a music and English teacher in various educational centers in Telde and Agüimes.
After her retirement, she continued to deepen her studies, including theology. Maricarmen has balanced her family life with teaching, training, and her participation in the parish of San Gregorio, serving as an example of continuous learning.
The choice of Maricarmen Hernández for the proclamation will allow the festivals to begin with the voice of a neighbor who has witnessed the evolution of the neighborhood and who holds countless memories. Mayor Juan Antonio Peña has recognized her extensive dedication to teaching, music, and the parish community with this designation.
