The town of El Sauzal, in Tenerife, inaugurated a new sculpture dedicated to Mafalda, the famous comic character created by Maestro Quino, on Thursday, June 26, 2025. The artwork, located at Calle Constitución, nº 3, next to the Town Hall, serves as a tribute to the icon of critical thinking, feminism, and justice.
The figure, crafted by Argentine sculptor Pablo Irrgang, stands 80 cm tall and weighs 20 kg. It is made of pigmented epoxy resin and depicts Mafalda sitting on a municipal wooden bench, wearing her characteristic red dress. This is the sixteenth Mafalda sculpture worldwide and the fourth in Spain.
The one in El Sauzal is the 16th in the world and the fourth in Spain.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including the Mayor, Mr. Mariano Pérez Hernández, members of the Municipal Corporation, the sculptor himself Mr. Pablo Irrgang, Ms. Geraldine Cohen, Deputy Consul of the Argentine Consulate in Tenerife, and Mr. Manuel Darias Darias, Illustrator and Comic Critic. The event also featured a tango performance by the company Tango en Tenerife, Espacio Siglo XXI.
Prior to its permanent installation in front of the Town Hall, the Mafalda sculpture had toured various locations in El Sauzal, generating anticipation and earning the nickname "the Sauzalera Mafalda".
