Gabriela Paun, one of the young promises of Canarian tennis, emerged victorious against France's Nahia Berecoechea in a match that lasted over two hours. The final score was 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 in favor of the local player.
The match was the most contested of the first qualifying round. After winning the first set, Paun saw her opponent equalize the match in the second, but she managed to win in a thrilling third set.
Other favorites also had successful debuts. Germany's Joelle Lilly Sophie Steur defeated France's Alyssa Reguer 6-1, 6-3. Finland's Laura Hietaranta, the third seed in the Qualifying, overcame Madrid's Lidia González 6-2, 6-0. Malaga's Lorena Solar also advanced by beating Murcia's Alba Rey 6-1, 7-5.
Several Italian players, including Laura Mair, Eleonora Alvisi, Camila Zanolini, and Sofia Rocchetti, along with Germany's Gina Marie Dittmann, France's Emma Lene, the Netherlands' Demi Tran, and Serbia's Elena Milovanovic, also progressed to the next round.
The second round will be played tomorrow starting at 9:30 AM, deciding the eight spots for the main draw of this tournament, the only top-tier event of the ITF World Tennis Tour held in Spain. Entry is free until full capacity.
