The plot begins with a long bus journey from Puerto Rico to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, where the protagonist reflects on the frustration of investing time and money in an interview for an unwanted internship. This situation triggers a monologue full of acidic humor and critiques of the economic system and daily life in the archipelago.
The Teatro Leal in La Laguna hosted the premiere of this adaptation, which transcends the author's personal experience to gather the concerns of many young people in their search for a future in the islands. The story centers on “Supersaurio”, a supermarket that offers the protagonist a job opportunity that confronts her with everything she detests.
During her “corporate adventure”, the protagonist navigates a simple environment, with shelves and cash registers, where the disparity between customer-facing staff, mostly Canarian and in precarious conditions, and office staff, mostly from the mainland, becomes evident. This dynamic generates conflicts, including a colleague who makes her life difficult and the social pressure of “after work” events.
Throughout the internship, the protagonist observes how her more stable colleagues celebrate staff cuts that affect the lowest rungs of the ladder. Anger and frustration grow as she cannot afford housing in the capital, despite her efforts. The situation changes with the appearance of an older colleague, with whom she shares confidences and falls in love.
The turning point comes with the offer of a permanent contract, an opportunity that forces her to internally debate her contradictions. Finally, the attractive salary convinces her to accept the position, allowing her to rent an apartment in Las Palmas and demonstrate her success. However, the personal cost is high: her colleague leaves the company, and her life is reduced to a routine of work, dinner, and rest.
The play concludes with the protagonist accepting that “the system has won”, transforming her frustration into a “bourgeois discipline”. After three years at the supermarket, she invents excuses to avoid company events and selects her own intern, a young woman she perceives with the same initial distrust she herself felt.
