The General Directorate of Emergencies of the Government of the Canary Islands has activated the marine pollution pre-alert phase along the coast of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, following the detection of a thousand-square-meter slick east of the Reina Sofía pier.

The slick, approximately 100 by 10 meters, was located less than two nautical miles (1.4 kilometers) east of the Punta del Muelle Reina Sofía. This situation led to the activation of the pre-alert phase within the Territorial Emergency Plan for Civil Protection of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands (PLATECA) since 11:00 AM this Monday.
The Port Authority of Las Palmas was the first to report the spill, activating its internal emergency plan in phase 1, as well as the National Maritime Plan, which is in Emergency Situation 1 phase. The Reina Sofía pier is the largest within the Port of Las Palmas.

"Maritime Rescue has confirmed that the spill is already under control and that the Salvamar Nunki is in the mechanical dispersion phase at the slick's location."
