The slick, approximately 100 by 10 meters, was located less than two nautical miles (1.4 kilometers) east of the Punta del Muelle Reina Sofía. This situation led to the activation of the pre-alert phase within the Territorial Emergency Plan for Civil Protection of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands (PLATECA) since 11:00 AM this Monday.
The Port Authority of Las Palmas was the first to report the spill, activating its internal emergency plan in phase 1, as well as the National Maritime Plan, which is in Emergency Situation 1 phase. The Reina Sofía pier is the largest within the Port of Las Palmas.
“"Maritime Rescue has confirmed that the spill is already under control and that the Salvamar Nunki is in the mechanical dispersion phase at the slick's location."
The activation of the PLATECA pre-alert phase aims to ensure greater coordination among the involved administrations and organizations, as well as to mobilize the necessary resources for proper monitoring of the situation and to guarantee an effective response.
