Construction work for the widening of the Carretera de Almatriche in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has begun. This project, long awaited by residents after years of requests for sidewalks and improved road safety, is part of the City Council's Internúcleos Plan. This initiative aims to provide safe routes on roads in the city's peripheral neighborhoods.
The urgency of these works has been highlighted by a fatal pedestrian accident on the Carretera de Almatriche last July, adding to other fatal accidents on the road in recent years. Residents have expressed the need for provisional measures, such as speed bumps and better-marked pedestrian crossings, given the delay in completing the sidewalks.
The first phase of the work, awarded to Hermanos García Álamo, S.L.U. for 933,000 euros, involves the construction of a two-way street to serve as a traffic alternative. The original project plans to reduce the current road to a single lane in one direction, so the new road will channel traffic in the opposite direction.
The execution of this initial phase, covering the remaining 140 meters of the new street, has an eight-month deadline. Subsequently, sidewalks will be established in Almatriche Bajo and the main road in Almatriche Alto will be redeveloped. The City Council has allocated 6.5 million euros from the Canary Islands Development Fund (Fdcan) for this project.
The Internúcleos Plan, designed during the previous term, aims to improve safety in neighborhoods such as Almatriche, Las Perreras, and Salto del Negro. Other projects within this plan, like the improvement of the GC-340 and the route between Hoya de la Plata and Tafira, are still awaiting development.
