The municipal plenary of Arucas has unanimously approved the naming of the pedestrian and bike path between Mesón Canario and Pasaje Venezuela as Paseo de Juana Teresa y Ramón Abelardo. This decision fulfills a commitment made during the project's inauguration and recognizes the efforts of two residents who spearheaded the campaign for improved road safety in the area.
Juana Teresa Rodríguez García, originally from La Goleta, spent years working in agriculture and as a domestic employee. Since moving to the Santidad neighborhood, she has been actively involved in community life. Her most recent endeavor was securing a safe pedestrian zone on the Cabildo road, which has now been developed into a route for pedestrians and cyclists with rest areas.
Meanwhile, Ramón Abelardo García, born in Lomo chico de Santidad in 1940, has shown strong commitment to his surroundings for decades, working at Asepeyo and consistently maintaining a conciliatory approach.
Mayor Juan Jesús Facundo also announced that a future session will propose naming the Mesón roundabout in honor of José Garrido, acknowledging his contributions to the well-being of the residents.
The Paseo del Mesón features a cycling lane with bike racks, pedestrian rest areas, and a slow lane for vehicles limited to 20 km/h. The project, which involved municipalizing the road and land expropriation, enhances safety and connects various parts of the district and the town center of Arucas. There are plans to extend this promenade towards the San Francisco Javier neighborhood.
In other news, the City Council's governing board has awarded Acciona Medio Ambiente a four-year contract, valued at nearly 4.3 million euros, for the maintenance, conservation, and cleaning of parks, gardens, green spaces, and trees in the municipality.
