The Spanish Navy has designated 2026 as the central year for commemorating the fifth centenary of the birth of Álvaro de Bazán y Guzmán, the first Marquis of Santa Cruz. This national program is structured around the VII Historical Navy Conference, which this year is entirely dedicated to the life and work of the distinguished mariner.
Among the events scheduled in the Canary Islands, there will be an open day at the Naval Museum of Las Palmas, located at the entrance of the Las Palmas Arsenal, on Sunday, May 3rd, from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Subsequently, on Wednesday, May 6th, at 6:00 PM, the same museum will host the conference D. Álvaro de Bazán and the galleys in the 16th and 17th centuries, given by Alberto Hernández Rubio, with free admission until full capacity is reached.
On Friday, May 8th, at 6:30 PM, the Plaza de la Constitución in Agaete will be the setting for a Flag Oath ceremony for civilian personnel. This event will be presided over by the Admiral Commander of the Naval Command of the Canary Islands, Santiago De Cola Trueba. Due to significant public interest, the Navy has extended the registration deadline until May 4th, with information available on the Ministry of Defense website.
Under the motto "D. Álvaro de Bazán, the best of ours", this historical conference is conceived as the starting point for an annual cycle of activities aimed at projecting Bazán's historical and strategic relevance to society. The commemoration has the support of the Congress of Deputies, following the approval of a Non-Legislative Proposal by the Defense Commission on October 29th, which urges support and promotion of the 5th centenary events and recognition of the work of the “500 years of Álvaro de Bazán” Association, a program collaborator.
As part of the Historical Conference, the Navy plans for its ships and facilities to carry out the traditional general dressing on May 3rd. Additionally, on May 4th, institutional audiovisual content dedicated to the figure of Bazán will be disseminated. The culmination of the main events of this commemoration is scheduled for October in Granada.
