Given the expectation of thousands of attendees to observe the eclipse on August 12th, the General Command of the Civil Guard in Las Palmas has deployed a comprehensive security operation. The aim is to ensure public safety and prevent incidents such as traffic congestion, security issues, or fires, especially considering the high temperatures.
According to José Santana, spokesperson for the Command's press office, the main concern is the concentration of people in areas known for astronomical observation. Officers will be stationed at points where greater attendance is expected.
In Gran Canaria, critical points include Cruz de Tejeda, Pico de las Nieves, the Mirador de Andén Verde, and the northwest coast. In Fuerteventura, the deployment will cover Pozo Negro, the Sicasumbre Astronomical Observatory, La Pared, Ajui, Cofete, and Punta de Jandía. In Lanzarote, the operation will focus on the La Santa area, in the municipality of Tinajo.
Officers will also ensure the use of certified glasses for observing the eclipse, raising awareness about the risks of not using necessary safety measures. Communications will be issued with recommendations on glasses, travel, and avoiding traffic jams.
One of the major concerns is traffic flow. The risk of drivers stopping in inappropriate places is highlighted. The Civil Guard recommends arriving early and parking in designated areas. Approximately 40 traffic officers will work to ensure normal circulation, from before the eclipse begins (18:55) until after it ends (around 20:45).
In addition to road safety, the operation addresses environmental protection, with a particular focus on the risk of fires. Seprona agents will carry out preventive measures to avoid fires and ensure the conservation of natural spaces. The prohibition of barbecues, lighting fires, and the importance of proper waste management, avoiding the disposal of glass, are reiterated.
The deployment will include personnel by land, sea, and air, with the participation of boats from the Maritime Service and drones. The objective is to guarantee safety and allow all citizens to enjoy the event.
