The traditional commemorative walk of the Battle of El Batán took place this Thursday, as part of the events for the 427th Anniversary of Admiral Pieter Van der Does's attack on Gran Canaria. The activity, promoted by the Canarias Nº 50 Regiment and the city councils of Santa Brígida and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, covered Lomo de Santo Domingo, Tafira Baja, Tafira Alta, and El Monte Lentiscal.
The route followed the path of the 'Dutch' troops and the pursuit by the Provincial Militias of Las Palmas, commanded by Lieutenant Governor Antonio Pamo Chamoso. The battle took place in a challenging mountainous terrain, leading to the retreat of the invading forces and the event known as the 'Gesta de El Batán', commemorated annually on July 3rd.
The official chronicler of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Juan José Laforet, participated in the event, narrating the historical facts. He complemented the account with a reflection on the strategic importance of the enclave for the island's defense and the significance of that day.
