The city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is preparing for the visit of Pope Leo XIV on June 11 and 12, for which a special mobility plan has been designed. This operation will include traffic closures and parking restrictions in key areas of the city to ensure the safety of the thousands of faithful expected at the various planned events.
The main venues for the events will be located at Plaza de Santa Ana, the Estadio de Gran Canaria, the Gran Canaria Arena, and surrounding areas, covering zones such as Vegueta, Triana, and Siete Palmas. Security will be dynamic and adaptable, especially in Vegueta, given the pontiff's planned transfer from Arguineguín.
The Department of Security will deploy reinforcements from the Local Police and Mobility Agents to regulate traffic and ensure road safety. Traffic closures, diversions, and parking restrictions are anticipated in Triana, Vegueta, and Siete Palmas, as well as occasional disruptions on the GC-1, the island's main road artery.
Civil Protection will also strengthen its presence in anticipation of the large expected public turnout. Authorities recommend that citizens plan their journeys, use public transport whenever possible, and stay informed through municipal communication channels about the evolving measures.
Traffic closures will begin on June 11, affecting multiple roads in the Vegueta-Triana area, with closures expected from 12:00 PM on the GC-1 and from 7:30 AM on the 12th for the transfer to the airport. The vicinity of Plaza Stagno and Plaza Santa Ana will be practically closed off.
In Siete Palmas, road closures will commence on the afternoon of June 10 and intensify on the 11th, affecting the area around the Estadio de Gran Canaria and the Gran Canaria Arena. Public transport will be prioritized for the evacuation of the area after the mass.
Parking prohibitions will be in effect from the morning of June 10 on various streets in the affected areas, and will be gradually lifted after the events conclude, prioritizing public transport.
