On April 15th, the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria announced the elevator's reactivation after resolving a technical issue related to water leaks in the Las Rehoyas sports center. However, the infrastructure has stopped working again due to the expiration of the maintenance contract.
This new interruption causes distress among regular users who rely on the elevator to access the sports center, run errands, or visit educational and health facilities. The infrastructure bridges a height difference of over 30 meters between the two areas.
“"At 6:30 AM, when we arrive in the morning, we already have between 20 and 30 WhatsApp messages asking if it has been fixed."
The sports center's management company indicates that many of its users, including between 2,000 and 3,000 individuals over 65, are affected. Some are forced to incur daily taxi expenses of 7 to 8 euros to attend their rehabilitation or aquatic therapy sessions.
Users like Mirta Esther Ortiz Castillo criticize the situation, noting that the elevator "wasn't even fixed for 20 days." Others, such as Isabel Orozco, state that "many people have stopped coming" due to the difficulty of climbing the stairs connecting to Schamann, which causes knee problems or forces them to take detours to catch public transport.
Manuel Santana Melián, 90 years old, also expresses his complaint, showing solidarity with those who need the elevator to connect with Schamann, supermarkets, and other services.
