The festive day began with a mass and a solidarity offering of food for Cáritas, followed by folkloric performances from groups such as the Bailarines de El Hierro. Subsequently, the image of the Virgin was moved towards the coast to commence one of the most anticipated moments of the celebration.
The 'Romería Barquera', distinguished by its strong connection to the sea and El Médano's fishing past, included a moving maritime procession through the bay. Numerous decorated boats accompanied the image, creating a visual spectacle that drew residents and visitors to the promenade and surrounding streets.
This year's program also featured a street parade and the participation of the Fanfarria del Puerto de la Cruz. After the sea procession, the image returned to the parish church to continue the festivities.
The 'Romería Barquera' once again places the sea at the heart of El Médano's festivals, preserving a tradition that unites devotion to the Virgen de las Mercedes de Roja with the seafaring identity of this area of Granadilla de Abona.
The celebration continued in the afternoon with a popular festival featuring five musical groups: Dorada Band, Sonora Olimpia, Malibu Band, Maquinaria Band, and Tropin.
The festivities in honor of Our Lady of Las Mercedes de Roja do not conclude with the pilgrimage. Next Thursday, September 24th, the patron saint's day, a solemn mass will be held at 8:30 PM, followed by the traditional Procession of the Candles and a hot chocolate reception.
