The multipurpose oceanic vessel 'Duque de Ahumada', the largest ship of the Guardia Civil, has arrived at the Port of Las Palmas following a significant anti-drug trafficking operation.

The multipurpose oceanic vessel Duque de Ahumada, the largest ship in the Guardia Civil fleet, is currently docked at the Port of Las Palmas. Following its involvement in the capture of over 30,000 kilograms of cocaine aboard the merchant vessel Arconian, the ship has extended its gangway at the Sanapú dock, allowing the public to tour its facilities and learn about the complexity of maritime operations.
Measuring 83 meters in length and 14 meters in beam, the Duque de Ahumada is larger than other vessels in the Benemérita's fleet and stands out for its advanced technical capabilities. It is equipped with drones, underwater robots, a helipad, rapid intervention launches, and an operating room with satellite connection to the Defense hospital.
Named in honor of the founder of the Guardia Civil, the ship was constructed at the Vigo shipyards and completed in September. Its design makes it a floating base, capable of accommodating 28 crew members permanently and up to 56 when necessary. The crew, comprising both civilian personnel and Guardia Civil agents, works in fifteen-day shifts, ensuring the vessel remains operational continuously.
The vessel features five decks. The top deck houses the command bridge, while the lower decks include cabins, officers' quarters, the boat deck with auxiliary vessels, a galley, dining area, a gymnasium, and a shipwreck room capable of assisting over 120 people. It also has a morgue and medical facilities. Visitors are not permitted access to the cells where apprehended individuals are held.
Among its notable equipment is an 11-meter rapid launch, capable of exceeding 60 knots, which was used to board the merchant vessel Arconian. The Duque de Ahumada primarily focuses on combating drug trafficking and controlling irregular migration, but it also participates in maritime rescue, fisheries inspection, and surveillance operations.
Life aboard combines operational discipline with camaraderie. The ship is equipped with a gymnasium, common rest areas, and leisure spaces to alleviate stress during long periods at sea, especially when not engaged in high-risk operations. The crew has participated in rescues, including that of a Galician fishing boat that sank shortly after the ship's launch.
