The Directorate General of Blood Donation and Hemotherapy of the SCS stresses the need for citizens to donate blood regularly, at least twice a year. The goal is to maintain adequate reserves to cover surgical interventions, oncological treatments, transplants, emergencies, and other healthcare needs in the archipelago's hospitals.
Since blood and its components cannot be produced artificially, their availability depends exclusively on voluntary and periodic donation. Each donation can be vital for several people undergoing complex medical situations.
To facilitate participation, the Directorate General of Blood Donation and Hemotherapy has deployed mobile blood extraction units in various locations across the archipelago and keeps fixed donation points active on all islands.
Locations and schedules for donating during the weekend and the upcoming week have been detailed for Gran Canaria (including Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Lomo Apolinario, Parque San Telmo, COFARCA, Centro Comercial Alcampo, Mesa y López, Centro Comercial Las Arenas), Tenerife (including Adeje, Hospital Universitario de Canarias, Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria, San Miguel, La Orotava, La Laguna, Arafo, Punta del Hidalgo, Bajamar, Plaza de La Catedral, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Granadilla de Abona), Fuerteventura (including Puerto del Rosario, Acuartelamiento de Puerto del Rosario, Calle 1º de Mayo, Hospital General de Fuerteventura), Lanzarote (Hospital Universitario Doctor José Molina Orosa), El Hierro (including Frontera, La Restinga, Valverde, Plaza Santiago), and La Palma (Hospital Universitario de La Palma). Donations are also possible in La Gomera (Hospital Nuestra Señora de los Reyes).
Basic requirements for donating include being between eighteen and 65 years old (up to sixty for a first-time donation), weighing over fifty kilograms, being in generally good health, and not being pregnant.
