The Naciente grandstand of the Estadio Insular, which for over half a century vibrated with the cheers for Unión Deportiva Las Palmas, is today dying amidst neglect and garbage. This vertical wall, a witness to countless matches and historic club moments, presents a deplorable image, unworthy of its memory and its current symbolism as part of the future urban park in the center of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
The tarp that once covered the concrete seating, adorned with images from the club's golden eras, has almost completely disappeared. What remains are wrinkled folds on the stairs, like remnants of a glorious past that is crumbling away. Residents and park users have denounced this situation, calling it "depressing" and "unacceptable" for a public facility.
The sense of belonging to a football club mixes with indignation at the state of disrepair. The familiar atmosphere of match days is recalled, with veteran fan clubs and supporters who flocked in large numbers, forming queues to access the stands. Today, that space has become an improvised landfill, with debris of all kinds, mattresses, and even signs of overnight stays, while park life continues just a few meters away.
From the Parks and Gardens department of the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Council, information is provided about rehabilitation work, including reseeding affected areas and aerating the soil. However, excessive winter rain and a series of storms have complicated maintenance, causing damage such as the lifting of wooden planks that will be replaced.
The grandstand, historically known as Naciente, Poniente, Fedora, or 'del morro,' has been the scene of sporting passions and a refuge for memories. Currently, its future awaits the complete transfer from the Cabildo de Gran Canaria to the City Council and authorization for a health center. In the meantime, the Estadio Insular remains a testament to another time and another city, with the roar of that grandstand as the epicenter of a more popular Unión Deportiva.
