The Port Authority of Las Palmas has completed the construction of the first floating caisson, named 'Virgen de la Peña', intended for the expansion of the commercial dock in Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura.

This caisson, the first of eight that will form the new infrastructure, has already been launched and is currently moored in the port of Las Palmas. It will remain there until its transfer to Puerto del Rosario for placement. The manufacturing of these structures is carried out continuously, 24 hours a day.
The expansion of the commercial dock in Fuerteventura's capital aims to improve the port's protection against northern swells, thereby increasing its operational capacity. Additionally, the new dock will serve as a berth for unloading petroleum products, freeing up the final section of the commercial dock for other uses.
The 'Virgen de la Peña' caisson measures 36.05 meters in length, 19.55 meters in width, and 15.90 meters in depth. Its dimensions are slightly smaller than the remaining seven caissons, as it will be located in the future ro-ro ramp. All caissons are rectangular reinforced concrete blocks, internally lightened with rectangular cells and featuring a continuous footing at their base.
The new dock project, with a budget of 40,662,697.66 euros, is funded by European Feder 4 funds. It will consist of two main sections: the first, with two caissons and a total length of 105.30 meters, and the second, with five caissons and a length of 269.90 meters. A 36.25-meter heel will be attached to the second section.
