The Canary Islands Government's Department of Health has published a series of health guidelines for citizens attending the events scheduled for Pope Leon XIV's visit to the archipelago. The aim is to ensure health safety and minimize incidents.
Regarding hydration and nutrition, it is advised to prioritize water or mineral salt drinks, avoiding excessive consumption of caffeine, alcohol, or sugary soft drinks that accelerate dehydration. Light and easily transportable food is recommended, along with drinking small sips of water constantly throughout the day, aiming for about two liters daily. Natural nuts, well-washed fresh fruit, and whole-grain cereal bars are suggested as energy-boosting options.
Concerning clothing and footwear, the importance of fresh, loose-fitting, and breathable clothing, such as cotton, is emphasized for prolonged sun exposure. It is suggested to bring a light warm layer for cooler hours and an umbrella that can also serve as a sunshade. For footwear, the insistence is on comfortable, closed shoes with good cushioning that are not new, along with clean cotton socks to prevent blisters.
Sun protection is crucial. Applying high-factor sunscreen (SPF 50+) before leaving home and reapplying it every two hours is recommended. Covering the head with a cap, hat, or wide-brimmed hat, and wearing approved sunglasses with UV filters are essential measures to prevent heatstroke and eye strain.
Finally, a special call is made to individuals with chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, or heart disease. They are advised to carry their full day's medication, plus two extra doses, along with their original health card and a paper copy of their latest clinical report for any eventuality.
