The exhibition, organized by the ISTAC and the CSIC, was inaugurated this Friday by the Minister of Finance of the Government of the Canary Islands, Matilde Asián, and the director of the IEGD-CSIC, Diego Ramiro. Also in attendance were the Vice Minister of Tourism, José Manuel Sanabria; the director of the ISTAC, Sergio Alonso; and the director of the Elder Museum, José Gilberto Moreno, among other specialists.
The exhibition pays tribute to Antonio Arbelo Curbelo (1909-2004), a key figure in Canarian demography whose career focused on pediatrics and the fight against infant mortality.
Matilde Asián highlighted the importance of recovering Arbelo's work, emphasizing his role as a bridge between public statistics and the design of policies for child protection. The minister stressed that this tribute recognizes the link between public health and health statistics.
Diego Ramiro explained that Arbelo's research focused on reducing infant and infectious disease mortality in Spain, seeking to improve measurement methodologies. He added that his work is fundamental for those studying infant mortality in the country.
The exhibition is itinerant and, after a four-week run at the Elder Museum, will move to the Complejo Hospitalario Universitario Insular - Materno Infantil in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
