29-Year-Old Investigated for Reckless Driving and Hit-and-Run on GC-1

A 29-year-old man is under investigation for reckless driving and fleeing the scene after causing multiple collisions on the GC-1 highway, between Telde and Carrizal, leaving two people with serious injuries and significant material damage.

The Traffic Investigation and Analysis Group (GIAT) of the Civil Guard identified the alleged perpetrator after examining video footage shared on social media, witness testimonies, and formal complaints filed by those affected.
Over a stretch of approximately 10 kilometers, the individual drove recklessly on the GC-1, colliding with several vehicles and continuing without stopping after each incident. The Traffic Operations Center (COTA) received numerous calls from drivers reporting the vehicle's erratic behavior. Despite a Civil Guard deployment to locate the driver, they could not be apprehended at the time.
The accidents caused by this driving resulted in serious injuries to two individuals and significant material damage. The investigation took a crucial turn with the emergence of videos on social media partially depicting the events, allowing investigators to pinpoint the affected section of the highway and gather details about the vehicle involved.
In the following days, several complaints were filed by those affected by the hit-and-run incidents, providing additional information about what happened and the vehicle. Investigators cross-referenced this data with the shared footage, witness accounts, and statements from those involved, ultimately enabling the GIAT to identify both the car and its driver.
Subsequently, the Civil Guard located the individual, a 29-year-old male, and informed him of his status as a suspect for alleged offenses including manifest reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, and negligent injury, among other potential charges. The case files have been forwarded to the Court of Instruction in Telde.
This action is part of an investigation conducted by the GIAT of the Road Safety Investigation Unit (UNIS) of the Las Palmas Traffic Subsector. The Civil Guard indicates that the events could constitute offenses under articles 381 and 382 bis of the Penal Code, related to manifestly reckless driving and leaving the scene of an accident, as well as a possible charge of negligent injury, depending on the specific circumstances and outcomes of the collisions. Being under investigation does not imply guilt; the judicial authority will determine criminal responsibilities.
