Juan Avello Formoso, until now dean of the courts of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, has been appointed by the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ) as the new president of the High Court of Justice of the Canary Islands (TSJC). This appointment concludes a selection process in which magistrates Jaime Borrás Moya and the current president, Juan Luis Lorenzo Bragado, who was seeking re-election, also participated.
The new president, who joined the judicial career in 2001 and arrived in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in 2007, has developed a significant part of his career on the island. Before becoming the exclusive dean of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria since January 2022, he led the Court of First Instance number 2 of the capital of Gran Canaria until the end of 2021. He was part of the Governing Chamber of the TSJC as an elected member between 2009 and 2014.
Avello Formoso takes on the leadership of an institution that, according to the candidates' programs, must face challenges such as reducing litigation, strengthening internal management, and bringing Justice closer to citizens.
Among the other candidates was Jaime Borrás Moya, who has been linked to the Contentious-Administrative Chamber of the TSJC since 1998 and presided over that Chamber for two periods. For his part, Juan Luis Lorenzo Bragado, president since 2021, joined the judicial career in 1989 and developed part of his career in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
