Between January and June 2026, the municipal Animal Protection Center registered the intake of 170 cats and 169 dogs. During this same period, a total of 94 animals, of which 56 were dogs and 38 cats, were adopted, thus finding a second chance.
The Councilor for Social Welfare, Equality, Care, and Health of the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Council, Carmen Luz Vargas, highlighted the work of the center's staff, recognizing their dedication to the care and follow-up of pets to facilitate their adoption.
The adoption process begins through the municipal website and the area's WhatsApp channel, where the list of available animals can be consulted. After choosing a pet, interested individuals must complete a preliminary survey that analyzes their experience with animals, knowledge of their care, and the conditions of the new home.
Requirements for adopters include having the necessary time and resources, as well as demonstrating that the decision is well-considered and responsible. The application is managed via the email address proteccionanimal@laspalmasgc.es.
Councilor Carmen Luz Vargas emphasized that the commitment of citizens to adoption "represents a new opportunity for them," ensuring the care and attention of the animals.
