The Plaza de Santa Ana in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria unveils its traditional Corpus Christi carpet, this year dedicated to peace with a message of support for Palestine and Western Sahara.

The emblematic Plaza de Santa Ana in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has been adorned with the traditional carpet created for the Corpus Christi celebration. This year, the floral composition goes beyond the religious and cultural, incorporating an explicit message for peace and visual references to Palestine and Western Sahara.
The creation of this ephemeral work of art was carried out by the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, through its municipal Parks and Gardens service. Over 600 square meters of the plaza have been covered with carefully selected natural materials, including more than a thousand bouquets of flowers, salt, black gravel, sand of different shades, and 475 square meters of grass.
The central design features a globe accompanied by the phrase “Yes to peace,” a call for an end to armed conflicts. The predominant colors, black, white, green, and red, were chosen for their evocation of the Palestinian and Sahrawi flags.
The carpet's creation involved a large team of 60 workers from the Parks and Gardens service, working in morning and afternoon shifts. Additionally, four operators will remain on standby until the start of the Corpus Christi procession to ensure the artwork's preservation.

"The initiative aims to join international demands for an end to violence and wars."

Gemma Martínez Soliño · Councilor responsible for the area
The councilor responsible for the area, Gemma Martínez Soliño, explained that the initiative seeks to show solidarity with the situation in Palestine and commemorate the 50th anniversary of the proclamation of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, maintaining the presence of colors linked to both territories.
