Las Palmas de Gran Canaria takes another step in its bid for European Capital of Culture 2031, launching an 'Open Call' that prioritizes professionals, organizations, and cultural agents from the archipelago.

The Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Council is advancing the bid for European Capital of Culture 2031 (LPGC´31) with a renewed focus on the individuals and entities that drive cultural activity. The main objective of this initiative is to listen to the sector, identify capabilities, strengthen networks, and foster new collaborations that enrich the cultural project.
Mayor Carolina Darias highlighted that this second 'Open Call' represents a firm commitment within the bid, defining it as a collective project for the city and islands. She emphasized the ambition to transform culture into a tool for social, urban, and democratic change, noting that the bid is entering a more demanding phase requiring greater precision and ambition to showcase the city's potential at a European level.
José Luis Pérez Pont, artistic director of the bid, explained that this call signifies an evolution by focusing on the people, organizations, and agents who make cultural creation and management possible, recognizing their work. The initiative aims to promote projects capable of generating impact and learning, strengthening the cultural ecosystem through citizen involvement and the reflection of local identity.
To date, 65 proposals have been received for this 'Open Call', as reported by the Councilor for Culture, Josué Íñiguez, who stressed the intention to reinforce the link with citizens.
The inter-island tour 'Rebelión de la Geografía' of LPGC'31 has commenced, with an initial informational stop at the Civic Center of Arrecife (Lanzarote) on June 19th. The session presented the project's conceptual axes and details of the 'Open Call', which remains open until July 15th to incorporate new profiles and proposals for the 'Bid Book' to be presented to the European jury.
The next stop on the tour will be in La Palma, specifically at the Real Sociedad Aridane, in the municipality of Los Llanos de Aridane, on Friday, July 3rd, at 7:00 PM. Through this initiative, LPGC'31 seeks to build an inclusive and shared bid for the entire archipelago, bringing the project closer to interested professionals, collectives, companies, and institutions.
