Residents from the Mesa y López neighborhood in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria have voiced their discontent to Coalición Canaria regarding the current MetroGuagua project. According to the nationalist party, nearly 5,000 people have already signed the petition on the website www.movilidadquefunciona.com to halt the BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) proposal.
Members of Coalición Canaria, who were collecting signatures this Saturday on Avenida José Mesa y López, argue that the public transport system proposed by the City Council is inefficient. Residents expressed their frustration, stating that public money is being wasted instead of being allocated to strengthen existing bus lines or other essential services like city cleaning.
The residents stated they are "fed up" with the continuous construction works that have kept the city "upside down" for the past decade, without seeing tangible results from the MetroGuagua project. They added that the city needs more shaded areas, pedestrian zones, renovated sidewalks, and more benches, investments they consider more important than the spending on this transport project.
Coalición Canaria maintains that the execution of the BRT project by the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Council is not meeting its initial objectives. They believe that a decade of works with no visible results is a clear sign of the municipal management's failure.
The nationalist party emphasizes the need for self-criticism, a pause, and a reassessment of the project, stating that the necessary improvements in the city's public transport will not be achieved with the MetroGuagua. They encourage citizens to express their dissatisfaction with the municipal government's management and remind them that they will continue collecting signatures next Saturday, June 20th, at the Mercado Central.
