The Municipal Symphonic Band of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will commemorate Canary Islands Day with a series of three concerts in May, presenting a repertoire that merges traditional Canarian music with symphonic arrangements and works by composer Laura Vega.

Under the title “Tiempo de zafra” (Harvest Time), the Municipal Symphonic Band (BSM) joins the celebrations of Canary Islands Day with a series of performances scheduled for Thursdays, May 14, 21, and 28. All concerts will begin at 8:00 PM and will take place in different emblematic locations in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria: Plaza del Pilar Nuevo, Plaza de España, and the Auditorio José Antonio Ramos in Parque Doramas.
The program will feature prominent guest artists, including timple player Domingo Rodríguez Oramas “El Colorao”, and vocalists Pedro Manuel Afonso and Thania Gil. The repertoire will focus on the rich heritage of traditional Canarian music, reinterpreted in an innovative symphonic format.
One of the central elements of the cycle will be the performance of Zafra, a timple concerto by composer Laura Vega, with Domingo Rodríguez Oramas “El Colorao” as the main soloist alongside the BSM. This work will be integrated into a program that combines popular traditional pieces with arrangements and original compositions for symphonic band.
Additionally, Pedro Manuel Afonso and Thania Gil will lend their voices to a selection of traditional themes, with arrangements by Ricardo González. The same musician is also the author of a commemorative overture dedicated to the Canary Islands, which will be part of the cycle's repertoire. The artistic director of the BSM, Germán Arias, highlighted that this proposal aims to connect the archipelago's identity music with new formats and sound languages, within the framework of the Canary Islands Day programming.
