The Las Canteras area in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria welcomes the return of open-air live music with the Música Viva initiative. This new concert series, which will run until next November, begins this Saturday, August 15th, with performances by the bands Pleito and La Cofradía at the Jardines del Atlántico. All concerts will start at 7:00 PM.
The program, held monthly, includes three more dates in Gran Canaria. On September 12th, Velvet Flores and Laiv will perform at the Pilar square. On October 10th, Hey Chabón and Ana Falcón Trío will showcase their repertoires at Saulo Torón. Finally, on November 14th, OM Domínguez and Madrelagua Project will present their proposals in the vicinity of La Cícer.
The mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Carolina Darias, emphasized during the presentation at Jardines del Atlántico that the goal is "to hear music made here again, with Canarian talent". The initiative aims to offer a new stage and a different musical proposal each month in various locations around Las Canteras, progressively building a cultural route along the beach. The Councilor for Security, Coexistence, and Culture, Josué Íñiguez, added that following the Canarian music scene is "a way to recognize the city's sonic identity".
The first performance this Saturday will be by Pleito, a project by Alba Gil Aceytuno, characterized by an experimental and avant-garde style. It will be followed by La Cofradía, offering classic jazz. Nelson Saavedra, the double bassist of the group, described their style as "classic jazz, with the aesthetic of the 50s, featuring double bass and trumpet, all very acoustic and raw, but with our compositions in a more modern language", influenced by artists such as Motown, Parker, Armstrong, Davis, Coltrane, or Coleman. The band, composed of four musicians, will release their first album on Spotify this Saturday.
The second date of the series, on September 12th, will focus on electronic pop. On one hand, Velvet Flores will perform, a project led by Marta Holly, who defines her sound as "bedroom pop mixed with ambient and a couple of touches of post-punk", with influences from The Smiths, Bjork, or Enya. On the other hand, Laiv will be presented, a project by Leonardo Segovia, focused on exploring sounds and textures.
The third event, on October 10th, will feature Hey Chabón, led by Agustín Lapertosa, who blends genres like reggae, son, and cumbia with a live performance by five musicians and a performer. They will share the stage with the young Ana Falcón, who will present her debut album accompanied by violinists Carolina Álvarez and Patricia Hurtado.
The cycle will conclude on November 14th with the performances of OM Domínguez and Madrelagua Project. OM Domínguez will offer their unique blend of genres, while Madrelagua Project, with a seventies vibe, will explore soul, funk, indie, and alternative rock. Beatriz Juani Mariño, singer for Madrelagua Project, describes their independent rock with touches of black music and sings in English, with songs like "Unstoppable".
