The Prosecutor's Office is seeking a 42-year prison sentence for a man accused of alleged crimes against the sexual freedom and integrity of three sisters of his former partner and a niece. The events, which reportedly occurred between 2003 and 2020 in various residences in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, affected the victims when they were underage.
According to the indictment, the defendant, identified as G.D.G.D., allegedly exploited "family cohabitation and the existing relationship of trust" to repeatedly engage in "acts of a sexual nature over the years." The investigation details episodes that spanned approximately 17 years, affecting four different victims.
The Public Prosecutor's Office places the initial incidents between 2003 and 2013 concerning one of the sisters, with an additional episode in 2017. For a second victim, the investigated events allegedly occurred between 2007 and 2018. A third sister reportedly suffered episodes between 2009 and 2013, and another in 2020. The accused's niece, born in 2008, is alleged to have been a victim between late 2013 and 2018.
The Prosecutor's Office considers the context of "family closeness and trust" in which the events took place to be "especially relevant." Psychological reports included in the case indicate that three of the victims show sequelae consistent with anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder.
The acts are considered constitutive of two continuing offenses of sexual abuse with penetration against minors, two continuing offenses of sexual abuse without penetration, and two aggravated sexual abuse offenses. The requested sentence totals 42 years in prison, in addition to periods of supervised release, deprivation of parental rights, and restraining orders.
“"The defendant exploited family cohabitation and the existing relationship of trust with the minors to repeatedly engage in acts of a sexual nature over the years."
In terms of civil liability, the Public Prosecutor's Office is seeking compensation for moral damages totaling 190,000 euros: 60,000 euros for each of the three sisters and 10,000 euros for the niece. The defendant, who has no prior criminal record, was held in pre-trial detention from May to July 2023.
