The Port Authority of Las Palmas is in the final stages of construction for the first phase of the future Port of Las Palmas Urban Park. Work, which began in January of this year, has reached 90% completion and is expected to conclude throughout this September.
This initial phase covers an area of 11,528 m2, which will soon be available for public enjoyment. The overall project involves several phases, and upon completion, the Urban Park will span 52,000 m2, creating a significant green lung at the southern entrance of the Port of Las Palmas.
The current development is creating an open space that will include lawns, trees, shrubs, a children's play area, and a calisthenics zone. It will also feature pedestrian areas for bicycles and other personal mobility devices, as well as spaces for leisure, dining, shade, and rest.
“"The objective of the Port Authority with the first phase of this park is to create an outdoor space that citizens can enjoy immediately. But the park doesn't end here; we are going to create a large green lung of 52,000 m2 that we will develop over time. We are currently about to finish the first phase of this great green lung and hope to start working on other areas soon, as space becomes available, to turn it into a large park. Furthermore, we must not forget that these 52,000 m2 will also serve as an open-air museum, as our intention is to install port elements throughout the green lung."
The park, conceived as a continuation of the original project, aims to become a new meeting point for citizens, combining green areas, leisure spaces, and urban facilities within the port environment. This initiative is part of the port space transformation strategy by the Port Authority of Las Palmas to reconcile the port's economic activity with new urban, social, and environmental uses.
