The Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Council has approved a significant government restructuring, aiming to consolidate its tripartite pact and address internal challenges with fourteen months remaining until the next elections.

The decision, made during a plenary session held this Thursday in the Golden Hall of the Consistorial Houses, seeks to resolve previous tensions, such as the departure of Inmaculada Medina and the split between Nueva Canarias and Municipalistas Primero Canarias. This reorganization ensures the continuity of the government agreement between the PSOE, Nueva Canarias, and Unidas Sí Podemos.
One of the key points of the restructuring is the transfer of the management of Guaguas Municipales to Pedro Quevedo, from Nueva Canarias, an area previously under the responsibility of José Eduardo Ramírez. This change comes after a period of instability and tensions among the political parties forming the local government.

"It is fair to defend Pedro Quevedo and his political party. The Socialist Party has been governing in coalition with Nueva Canaria and also with the left-wing space of Unidas Sí Podemos in different areas. And the Socialist Party and this mayor are committed to the agreements they signed. Because that is also a matter of coherence and political commitment. And it is a clear and unambiguous message to the citizenry, of commitment and political competence."

Carolina Darias · Mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
Mayor Carolina Darias defended the legitimacy of Nueva Canarias to take over the public transport company, emphasizing the PSOE's commitment to the coalition agreements. The opposition, however, has criticized the measure, calling it a “mere bargaining chip” to ensure the survival of the tripartite.
Regarding other areas, Francisco Hernández Spínola definitively takes over Water, while Carnival is merged with Urban Hygiene under the direction of Héctor Alemán. The council departments of Festivities and Territorial Coordination are integrated into Education, led by Saturnina Santana, with direct management by Betsaida González and Alexis Rodríguez.

"The configuration of a government structure is not an end but a means to provide better services. With harsh, tense, and rude words, acting in pre-electoral mode, citizens are not convinced."

Francisco Hernández Spínola · Councilor for the Presidency
The debate in the plenary session was tense, with the opposition, including Jimena Delgado-Taramona from the PP and Rafael de Juan Miñón from Vox, accusing the government of prioritizing political survival over citizen interests. David Suárez from Coalición Canaria also expressed skepticism, while the unaffiliated councilor Clotilde Sánchez supported the changes as typical in the final stretch of a mandate.
