President Fernando Clavijo chaired the Capitality Council today, where financial contributions for the archipelago's two main capitals were discussed. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will receive 5,301,487 euros, while Santa Cruz de Tenerife will get 4,660,224 euros. This annual allocation complies with the Shared Capitality Statute, which ensures specific budget lines in the Autonomous Community's General Budgets to cover expenses related to this status.
Government spokesperson Alfonso Cabello highlighted that the 8.5% increase for the capitals is nearly three points higher than the regional government's average budget for 2027 (5.7%), reaffirming the Executive's commitment to the role these cities play. Cabello noted that holding this Council is a preliminary step for the approval of the Canary Islands Budget Law for 2027 in an extraordinary Council next Thursday, allowing for its timely presentation to Parliament before October 31st.
The mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Carolina Darias, participating remotely, emphasized the importance of sufficient resources to address the specific needs of the Gran Canaria capital, which bears a greater burden in public service provision. She stressed the need for adequate funding to meet citizens' demands.
For his part, the mayor of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, José Manuel Bermúdez, described the allocation of 4.66 million euros as the highest in history. He explained that these funds are "fundamental to cover the expenses we assume as a city, which go beyond those of any other municipality," as they support services and infrastructure that benefit not only residents but also many people from other municipalities for work, study, errands, or accessing various services.
Also attending the meeting were Vice President Manuel Domínguez; Minister of Finance, Matilde Asián; Minister of Presidency, Lady Nieves Barreto; Minister of Universities, Migdalia Machín; Vice Minister of Presidency, Alfonso Cabello; and Vice Minister of Finance, Gabriel Megías.
