The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued alerts for the entire Canarian archipelago due to the arrival of a new front bringing rain, swells, and strong winds. As of 08:00 AM on Thursday, April 9, 2026, the alert for coastal phenomena has been activated, with particular emphasis on the dangerous sea conditions.
The Las Palmas de Gran Canaria City Council has disseminated a series of recommendations via its social media channels for citizens. These include advising against water sports, avoiding roads near the coastline, and refraining from swimming at beaches with red flags.
“"The sea will be especially dangerous, so it is essential to follow the recommendations. Your safety is the most important thing."
Adverse weather conditions have also impacted air traffic. Up to eight flights destined for Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura airports have been diverted, primarily to Tenerife South, due to intense wind gusts. Flights from Seville, Madrid, Warsaw, Gothenburg, London Stansted, and Dublin were among those affected.
Aemet forecasts that rain will return to Gran Canaria, Tenerife, and Fuerteventura from 4:00 PM onwards. For Friday, weak to moderate precipitation is expected in the north of the mountainous islands, as well as in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, potentially becoming persistent in higher relief areas.
In an incident related to the storm, a tree fell onto a truck on Néstor de la Torre street in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria at 08:50 AM, causing no injuries, only material damage.
