The mayor of Telde, Juan Antonio Peña, has reiterated his commitment to the taxi sector and is demanding swift action from the Government of the Canary Islands to implement the municipality's new urban fares. The City Council approved the price update in March, following months of work with professionals and an economic study, but the proposal is currently blocked by the Price Commission and the Vice-Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Consumption.
Both the sector and the mayor have defended the municipal proposal and submitted reports to address the regional government's objections. Peña emphasizes the need to meet the demands of taxi drivers, considering current costs and the importance of fares reflecting the economic reality of the activity. He warns that procedural delays could render economic studies obsolete due to continuously rising service costs.
To unblock the situation, Juan Antonio Peña met with the Director General of Trade and Consumption of the Government of the Canary Islands, David Mille Pomposo, accompanied by taxi representatives. The possibility of following the path of other municipalities that advanced with their fares despite unfavorable reports was explored, but the Vice-Ministry's dismissive resolution has complicated the scenario.
A meeting scheduled with the Vice-Minister of Industry, Alfonso El Jaber, could not take place, and the appointment with David Mille Pomposo is set for October 15th, although the mayor has tried to bring it forward without success. The City Council insists it has fulfilled its part and calls on the Government of the Canary Islands to complete the necessary procedures so that the new fares can be published and come into effect.
Peña reaffirms his support for taxi professionals and his commitment to continue leading the necessary efforts to defend the municipal proposal, urging the regional executive to expedite meetings and offer a viable solution. The objective is to address a demand worked on for months with taxi drivers and prevent further delays in an update already approved by the council.
