This distinction recognizes his career of service, humanitarian commitment, and dedication to those most in need of support. The official resolution was presented to Sánchez Calero by the mayor of Telde, Juan Antonio Peña, on behalf of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation.
The proposal for recognition, which originated from the municipality of Telde itself, received unanimous support from the Municipal Corporation. Mayor Peña expressed his gratitude to the Spanish Government and the Ministry for considering this initiative, highlighting the value of a request shared by the democratic representation of Telde's citizens.
Juan Antonio Peña personally congratulated Daniel Sánchez Calero, emphasizing his vocation for public service, first during his 29 years in the Army of Land and subsequently through his dedication to volunteering with the Red Cross.
The municipal initiative, unanimously approved in the Plenary Session of the Telde City Council on September 26, 2025, highlighted his years of service in the Armed Forces, participation in international missions, and his joining the Red Cross in 2008. Since then, he has undertaken tasks in emergencies, humanitarian aid, health training, and first aid, as well as collaborating in assistance for migrants and vulnerable groups.
His career also includes representation and coordination roles within the Red Cross, with a special focus on the elderly, people with disabilities, and those facing particular difficulties. The awarding of the distinction culminates the procedure initiated by the City Council and recognizes work that extends beyond the local scope, impacting the entire Canary Islands.
The City Council emphasizes the importance of recognizing individuals who dedicate their careers to public service, solidarity, and care for those in vulnerable situations. The Officer's Cross of the Order of Civil Merit awarded to Daniel Sánchez Calero is, in this regard, a cause for satisfaction for the city and for those who institutionally promoted his candidacy.
