The Telde City Council authorized, after midday this Thursday, the reopening of the Melenara beach for swimming after receiving favorable reports from health authorities. This decision allows for the return to normality in one of the municipality's main coastal areas, following several days of preventive closure for public health reasons.
The swimming ban was decreed last Friday, October 30, after the Directorate of the Health Area of Gran Canaria provided the Consistory with the results of analyses carried out by the Canary Islands Health Service. Samples, collected on Wednesday, October 28, detected concentrations of intestinal enterococci exceeding permitted values in the northern sector, near the pier.
Faced with this situation, the mayor of Telde, Juan Antonio Peña, ordered the temporary suspension of swimming in line with health recommendations, prioritizing the protection of bathers and users. The measure remained in place for subsequent days pending new checks to determine the evolution of microbiological parameters and restore necessary health guarantees.
The favorable results from the latest controls and the corresponding assessment by Public Health have allowed the restriction to be lifted and swimming to be authorized again along the entire beach.
In parallel to the health actions, the City Council initiated the necessary technical checks to try to determine the cause of the detected alteration. The mixed company Aguas de Telde began inspections of the sanitation networks using cameras in the conduits, dye tests, and other actions aimed at locating possible anomalies or ruling out infrastructure incidents.
The origin of the elevated presence of enterococci was not determined when the closure was decreed, so the investigation aimed to examine different hypotheses and gather technical information to clarify what happened.
The City Council highlights the coordination maintained with Public Health professionals from the Government of the Canary Islands and municipal technical teams, as well as the importance of acting at all times according to analytical results and the indications of the competent authorities.
With this reopening, Melenara regains public swimming access once favorable sanitary conditions have been verified, maintaining the municipal commitment to monitoring water quality and protecting the coastline of Telde.
