The Local Energy Community El Rosario Solar has been awarded the Canarian Federation of Municipalities (FECAM) Award 2026 in the 'Territory, Sustainability and Infrastructures' category for its work in combating energy poverty.

The initiative, promoted by the El Rosario City Council, was recognized last night for facilitating shared access to clean energy and contributing to the reduction of inequalities. The mayor of El Rosario, Escolástico Gil, collected the award accompanied by the Councilor for Ecological Transition and president of the Local Energy Community, Fidel Vázquez, during the ceremony held in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
Escolástico Gil expressed his satisfaction with this recognition, which adds to the National Environment Award previously received by the project. The mayor highlighted the special value of this award, coming from the 88 Canary Islands municipalities, and emphasized the progress made since 2021 in establishing El Rosario as an island benchmark for energy communities and solutions to energy poverty.
The organization valued the importance of “turning sustainability into an opportunity to reduce inequalities,” bringing the benefits of renewable energies to the population. The FECAM award highlights the role of El Rosario Solar as a tool for a more sustainable, participatory, and socially just energy model.
During the gala, Escolástico Gil also presented a posthumous recognition for the municipal career of Francisco Javier Afonso Carrillo (1948-1984), the first mayor of Puerto de la Cruz during the democratic era and former civil governor of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, who tragically died in 1984. The award was received by his son, Aarón Afonso.
The Canary Islands Federation of Municipalities celebrated this first edition of the FECAM 2026 Awards to recognize the work of the archipelago's city councils. A total of 15 municipal projects competed as finalists in five categories.
