The measure, announced by Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez, aims to prevent public transport from getting stuck in the usual queues when the Las Teresitas parking lot reaches maximum capacity. The protocol will be implemented after trials and its future extension will be evaluated.
This initiative will be activated only under heat alerts and when significant traffic jams are anticipated, taking into account objections from residents of San Andrés, who have expressed their opposition to prioritizing a lane for public transport. The mayor acknowledged the logistical challenge of rapidly deploying signage and safety measures for alerts issued with little notice.
Tests suggest that while private vehicles will still experience delays, public transport will gain speed and punctuality with a dedicated lane. The council expanded beachhead parking by 300 spaces but believes the real solution lies in promoting bus usage, ensuring efficiency with an exclusive lane.
Additionally, 216,000 euros will be allocated to increase the frequency of bus lines serving the Anaga beaches during the summer. Permanent improvements will be made to lines 904, 911, and 944, with an expected increase of approximately 41,000 passengers on these urban routes and 85,000 on beach-connecting lines.
In the context of 175,000 registered vehicles for a population of 200,000 inhabitants, the mayor advocated for measures to regulate mobility and share public space. An ordinance is being developed to manage blue and green parking zones; the green zone will prioritize resident parking at no cost, while the blue zone still requires regulation.
