The agreement, driven by the council, was based on a proposal sent to the public business entity Fiestas de Santa Cruz de Tenerife on February 3. This date is after the closing of Fitur, which took place between January 21 and 25, and with the Carnival already underway. The proposal detailed an advertising campaign to promote the festival at Spain's main tourism fair, an objective that proved unfeasible given the dates.
The administrative file, accessed by this newspaper, reveals that the accepted offer included a report on the leisure offerings of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival 2025 (sic), to be published on the digital media, along with a package of 150 radio spots for digital radio and a display campaign. Additionally, it contemplated four broadcasts of a spot on the entity's YouTube channel and content promotion on its social networks.
“"This Management states that Fiestas de Santa Cruz makes an equitable distribution among local media, audiovisual, radio, and written, ensuring their freedom and independence, through the contracting of multiple institutional advertising campaigns with them."
The offer was accepted by the council just three days after its submission, on February 6, 2026, through a resolution to initiate the file. However, the campaign did not deliver on its promises. According to a justifying report, the promotion was reduced to two news articles on the website and a video, with no evidence of the agreed radio spots or advertising banners.
The promotion began on February 17, coinciding with the grand parade of the Carnival, and the second piece of information was published on February 24, focusing on post-carnival cleaning efforts. The video certified by the City Council was disseminated in early March. Thus, neither the requirement to promote the Carnival at Fitur nor before its celebration was met.
This 5,000 euro contract places the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council in a line of support for this type of media, joining other administrations that have allocated public funds to media entities accused of spreading hoaxes and generating hatred.
