Regular passenger traffic using the State Ports in the Canary Islands during August 2026 saw a notable increase of 4.7 percent compared to the same month of the previous year. A total of 984,802 passengers embarked or disembarked in the islands, surpassing the 941,022 recorded in August 2025. These figures are part of the Maritime Transport Statistics Compilation published monthly by the Canary Institute of Statistics (ISTAC).
The ports of Los Cristianos and Santa Cruz de Tenerife led passenger traffic in transport operations. Los Cristianos port handled one in every three travelers. On the other hand, Puerto del Rosario experienced the largest decrease, with a 48.7% drop in passenger numbers, while the Port of Santa Cruz de La Palma recorded an 18.4% increase.
Regarding cruise passenger traffic, Canary Islands ports received 20,763 passengers in August 2026, a decrease from the 32,546 in the previous year. The Port of Santa Cruz de La Palma and the Port of La Luz and Las Palmas saw declines of 68.7% and 40.4%, respectively.
The traffic of vehicles under passenger regime, those accompanied by a passenger, increased by 7.7% in August 2026. A total of 321,745 vehicles were recorded, compared to 298,676 in the same month of 2025.
The movement of TEU containers in Canary Islands ports grew by 8.3 percent compared to August 2025, reaching 192,649 containers versus 177,840 the previous year. The Port of La Luz and Las Palmas handles the largest volume of this traffic, accounting for 7 out of every 10 containers moved in the Canary Islands, and saw a 7.7% increase in its container movement.
During August 2026, a total of 3,137 vessels called at the state-managed ports in the Canary Islands, representing an increase of 11.9% compared to August 2025.
These figures refer exclusively to the eleven State Ports in the Canary Islands: Arrecife, El Rosario, Arinaga, La Luz and Las Palmas, Salinetas, Granadilla, Los Cristianos, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, San Sebastián de la Gomera, Santa Cruz de la Palma, and La Estaca. Other port facilities dependent on the Government of the Canary Islands, such as Puerto de Las Nieves, Corralejo, Playa Blanca, or Morro Jable, registered 699,613 passengers and 176,352 vehicles.
