The Department of Public Works, Infrastructure, Architecture, and Housing of the Cabildo of Gran Canaria has announced the complete opening of the Guiniguada viaduct, located on the Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Ring Road (GC-3), for the afternoon/evening of Monday, August 17. This reopening follows 16 days of structural waterproofing work, finishing 13 days earlier than the initially planned date of August 30.
Workers began asphalt paving on the southbound deck on Sunday, a task expected to take approximately 36 hours. After waterproofing and opening the northbound lane in seven days, the southbound lane is now being completed in nine days, instead of the initially planned 15.
The waterproofing work on the southbound deck was completed on Friday afternoon, covering 10,800 square meters of asphalt felt. This section of the bridge presented greater challenges due to its length and curved alignment compared to the northbound lane.
On Saturday, workers from Lopesan, the contracting company, finished complementary works and prepared the waterproofed surface for Sunday's asphalt application, which included a first intermediate asphalt layer.
On Monday morning, the final wearing course will be laid, a special micro-asphalt designed for faster rainwater drainage than standard asphalt. It is expected that after road markings are painted around midday, the viaduct can be opened to traffic by the afternoon or evening.
In total, over 18 square kilometers have been waterproofed across both decks of the Guiniguada viaduct, a task accomplished in record time. This is the first time this vital infrastructure, in service for over 20 years, has undergone waterproofing.
The waterproofing is part of a broader project to resurface 11 kilometers of the Ring Road, awarded last year for 18,722,343 euros and underway for several months during nighttime hours. The waterproofing works, carried out by Lopesan Asfaltos y Construcciones, represent an investment of 2.2 million euros.
